FURIA will have another shot at a spot in the title decider after falling to the consolidation final.
After over 110 rounds of play across three maps, Liquid defeated FURIA 2-1 (Nuke 22-18, Overpass 19-22, Inferno 16-14) to lock their spot in the grand final of the first North American Regional Major Ranking tournament of 2021, cs_summit 8. Meanwhile, the Brazilian side have fallen to the consolidation final, in which they will face the winner of O PLANO and EXTREMUM.
Following the match, Eric "adreN" Hoag was interviewed on the broadcast and shed some light on the recent in-game leadership changes in the squad, which saw Gabriel "FalleN" Toledo begin transitioning the duties back to Jake "Stewie2K" Yip.
"Right now, Jake is calling everything, pretty much on all the maps being the IGL" the coach revealed. "He just gels better with this core than when FalleN was calling. It just felt more natural for the rest of the squad — and FalleN and Jake just in general — I think it just makes more sense for the style of the team."
Nuke was picked by FURIA to kick off the series, but it was Liquid who clinched the lead in the opener after coming back from a tough first half on the defense. The Brazilian team looked to put up a commanding performance after controlling the first half as Terrorists, but despite winning the second half pistol and reaching a 12-5 scoreline Andrei "arT" Piovezan & co. couldn't close it out against a red-hot FalleN-Keith "NAF" Markovic duo.
The North American side quickly climbed back from the large deficit and even had the chance to finish off the map in regulation, but in the end they had to fight it out in double overtime, where Stewie2K made the difference with a couple of key multikills in a perfect second set.
With their backs against the wall, FURIA then fought back from a slow start on Overpass to equalize the series following another overtime affair. Once again, just one set wasn't enough as Liquid survived three match points before it went to the second set, where a double AWP setup in the hands of Paytyn "junior" Johnson and Kaike "KSCERATO" Cerato did the trick in a flawless defense.
Inferno saw Liquid bring FURIA to heel to secure a hard-earned 2-1 victory. arT's men looked out of sorts as they struggled for momentum all map long, but despite being down 7-14 the Brazilians persevered and mounted another scary comeback attempt, this time unsuccessful as FalleN's AWP triple on B prevented the match from going past regulation for the third time.
